Begun
in 1998,
RE.SOUND
is a project created by Jody Elff for a series of
audio installation works. Since its first appearance, RE.SOUND
has
developed into an exploration of how sonic energy can be used as a
palette to draw from in the pursuit of new audible textures. The name is
a reference to the process of sonic re-interpretation, which is the
foundation for the works themselves.
As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, our ability to compile
the data inherent in any given phenomenon increases; by analyzing the
existing sounds in a particular environment for tone and volume, a
wealth of data is made available. This data is then utilized to create a
new set of audible events that is re-introduced into the environment.
Because none of the resulting sonic combinations are pre-recorded, each
instant of the experience is unique. In each installation, the presence
and action of every observer has a direct influence on the behavior of
the piece. Re-interpreted, re-presented, re-cycled sound. RE.SOUND
