Inlet
1. v.t. – To admit  2. n – An entrance 3. Something inserted

Inlet’s sonic content is derived from the activity of the ambient noise in the gallery space. The gallery noise is gathered by a series of microphones and analyzed for tonal content. The results of these analyses are compared, and a harmonic structure is formed. A computer then compiles the sonic elements needed to render this structure, and the audible result is played through a series of speakers distributed around the gallery.

Portal

We take many journeys every day. As we focus on what awaits us at the destination, we seldom notice the journey itself. With origin and destination eliminated, the transit is all that remains. Portal is intended to examine the process of placement and reduction. The sonic elements are gathered and subjected to a process of time and phase manipulation, then selectively presented into the space. When the electrical phase of an audio signal is inverted and blended with the original signal the source sound is cancelled, resulting in areas perceived as null sound. These areas are not an absence of sound but rather a profusion of focused sound.
